Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty
October 16, 2010
$93

Statue of LibertyTravel to Liberty Park, Jersey City, NJ to board a ferry to Ellis Island, largely artificially created from landfill.  83% of the island lies in Jersey City.  The natural portion of the island lies in New York City and is completely surrounded by the landfill portion.  Between 1892 and 1954, 12 million immigrants entered the United States from this island, greeted by the Statue of Liberty "next door" on Liberty Island.  Closed in 1954, the building was restored and opened as a museum in 1990.  Today, over 40% of America's population can trace their ancestry through Ellis Island.  Can you?

The Statue of Liberty National Monument is one island comprised of Liberty Island and was one of several islands on the west side of Upper New York Harbor that contained large tidal flats which hosted vast oyster beds, a food source for the Lenape population.  It is also one of the few islands that was not submerged at high tide.  A defensive fort was built on the island in the early 1800s and the land battery on the island was built in the shape of an 11-point star.  It later became the base for the gift from the people of France, the Statue of Liberty.  Enjoy an enlightening and informative day with reserved tickets for the ferry crossing to Ellis Island where you can visit this fascinating museum and then take a short ferry ride, at your leisure, to Liberty Island to see the great Statue with return to Liberty Park by ferry.

Do you know that the Statue of Liberty was originally intended to be placed at Port Said for the opening of the Suez Canal?  However, Egypt was in a financial crisis at this time because of the construction of the canal, palaces and other extravagances of Ismail, the ruler of Egypt, and was unable to afford the statue.  So the French changed the face a bit and sent it aboard the frigate Isere to the United States.

A delightful box lunch included which you can eat on Ellis Island at a picnic table.
